As the sirens of war sound once again in Europe, a director who questions the meaning of theater meets some actresses from Kyiv who have come to Italy thanks to the Stage4Ukraine reception project. Together, they reflect on Three Sisters, the Chekhov play that Enrico Baraldi had been working on since 2019, wondering not only what it means to stage a Russian author today, but also what goals are realistically possible to aim for. Starting from the famous line ‘To Moscow! To Moscow!’, the director and his actresses – two Italians alongside the three Ukrainians – come to realize both the radical change in the symbolic value of the Russian capital and the illusory nature of any abstract promise of happiness. However, confidence survives in the far from sterile sense of theater, which here allows us to “remember an encounter that took place due to extraordinary circumstances, an encounter between two peoples, one fleeing war and the other observing.”

Enrico Baraldi, in questa sua prima importante produzione da regista, fa un lavoro minuzioso di spoliazione estetica ed emotiva, lo spettacolo rischierebbe di cadere nel precipizio della retorica e delle emozioni facili più e più volte, e invece non lo fa, si ferma tenendo la giusta distanza con una forma aperta che accoglie le contraddizioni del tema, del nostro presente, senza entrare nella polemica stantia, senza nutrire la propaganda, senza riempire il palco di morte. In questo spettacolo la guerra è la causa scatenante, la guerra è in qualche modo il motore drammaturgico; questo spettacolo dunque parla degli effetti della guerra, ma lo fa lasciando armi e violenza fuori dalla scena.
